New Spider-Man Director Hired! Fandom ablaze with muttering!

CBR reported this yesterday, and it is now confirmed by Sony, but the director of (500) Days of Summer, Marc Webb, is the new director of the Spider-Man film franchise. Webb is signed to do 3 films, all reportedly set in high school, with a script by James Vanderbilt (Zodiac, The Rundown) for the first film. Here's what the producers had to say about the hire:

At its core, Spider-Man is a small, intimate human story about an everyday teenager that takes place in an epic super-human world. The key for us as we sought a new director was to identify filmmakers who could give sharp focus to Peter Parker’s life. We wanted someone who could capture the awe of being in Peter’s shoes so the audience could experience his sense of discovery while giving real heart to the emotion, anxiety, and recklessness of that age and coupling all of that with the adrenaline of Spider-Man’s adventure. We believe Marc Webb is the perfect choice to bring us on that journey

I do appreciate the fact that they realize that it is not all action and that a big part of the life of Peter Parker is the personal stuff, as he has probably the most heart-ache of any super-hero. I enjoyed (500) Days of Summer, and I think that it did show that Webb is capable of capturing the quiet moments very well. My concern is the action, the stuff that has always made Spider-Man head and shoulders above all the other superheroes. Webb hasn't really directed much of anything except this one movie and a couple music videos. Is that enough of a pedigree for the premier Marvel superhero? I know this, if Marvel Studios controlled this property, he wouldn't have gotten the job. But I think he deserves a chance to bring the emotion to a high school Parker, and I'm definitely willing to give him that chance.
